China’s top state-owned infrastructure group (CEEC) announce new Coal-to-Nuclear (C2N) strategy!
China has enough coal power capacity to run the entire United States. Repowering China is our number 1 focus as an organisation.
The China Energy Engineering Group Co. (CEEC) is China’s top state-owned infrastructure group. They’ve officially announced a C2N strategy to convert retired coal plants into nuclear power stations, repurposing existing grid connections, land, workers, water access, and plant infrastructure — instead of scrapping them.
CEEC are looking at advanced reactors (HTGR, molten salt thorium) that require less water, smaller safety zones, and can fit into existing coal sites with minimal modification.
🎇 WHY THIS MATTERS:
This is huge news for the Repower Initiative. We have spent years promoting the pathway to Chinese state officials, academics and industry leaders.
Repowering is an excellent path to emission reduction, clean energy and future uses for existing coal assets.
We are now seeing the real-world impacts of our dedication, which includes producing foundational peer-reviewed research:

Old coal sites are not liabilities: they are the backbone of a cleaner future.
There are hurdles ahead: regulation, finance, public trust. When you already have steam systems, cooling infrastructure, grid access already in place… these become advantages, not burdens.
So here’s where we stand:
We don’t need to demolish to move forward.
We need to ask: How much faster can we repower?
