Removing coal boilers. Reusing infrastructure. Powering a cleaner future
We are transforming coal plants to use clean technologies by removing coal boilers and utilizing the existing infrastructure.
Benefits of Repowering
Coal power is the largest point source of global emissions, producing 10 GtCO₂ per year.
Preserve trillions in existing infrastructure investments by converting rather than abandoning them.
Support a just transition by retaining skilled jobs and revitalising affected coal regions.
Take advantage of existing grid infrastructure for quicker implementation compared to greenfield projects.
Enable direct replacement of coal capacity with reliable, dispatchable clean energy options.
Avoid building new generation elsewhere — reduce land use, air pollution, and local ecosystem impacts.

What are some repowering technologies for coal plants?
The most suitable options for coal repowering are those with the highest energy densities (advanced nuclear with up to 50 MWh/m2/year and advanced high-temperature geothermal (with up to 1.75 MWh/m2/year) compared to other clean alternatives like Solar or Wind (0.04 MWh/m2/year).
Are there successful examples of coal repowering projects?
Yes, there have been successful coal repowering projects worldwide. For example, the Wabash River Coal Gasification Repowering Project in the United States and the Rotterdam Climate Initiative in the Netherlands are notable examples of repurposing coal plants with cleaner technologies.
Is coal repowering economically viable?
Retrofit decarbonisation in Poland was shown to be most attractive using high-temperature small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to replace coal boilers, which can lower upfront capital costs by ~28–35% and levelized cost of electricity by 9–28% compared to a greenfield installation. Can repowering coal plants create new job opportunities?
Jobs will be created during the repowering process alongside jobs to operate the newly repowered plant. More importantly repowering a coal power plant has the potential to retain more than 66% of local plant workforce according to our study: “Retrofit Decarbonization of Coal Power Plants—A Case Study for Poland”.
