Retrofit Decarbonization of Coal Power Plants – A Case Study for Poland

December 28, 2020

This study uses the Polish coal power fleet as a case study. It shows that high-temperature small modular nuclear reactors can be an attractive option for retrofit decarbonization, reducing capital costs by ~28-35% and levelized cost of electricity by 9-28% compared to greenfield installations.

Implementing retrofit decarbonization globally by the late 2020s could avoid up to 200 billion tons of CO2 emissions.
