Title: Strategies for Coal Transition in Korea
IEA website: https://www.iea.org/reports/strategies-for-coal-transition-in-korea
This IEA–KEEI report provides a comprehensive assessment of South Korea’s transition away from coal in the power sector. Commissioned by Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, it examines how coal plants can be phased down while ensuring electricity security, affordability, and a people-centred transition.
For Repower, the report underscores that in South Korea: a densely populated, import-dependent energy system, coal transitions must go beyond closures. Repowering existing coal sites with clean, firm technologies offers a way to reduce emissions rapidly while reusing infrastructure, protecting jobs, and maintaining grid stability.
