India’s Energy Transition
As the world shifts away from coal-based energy, India finds itself at a pivotal moment in its energy journey. With coal plants globally facing environmental challenges and low utilization rates, several countries are adopting various strategies to transition to cleaner energy sources. Despite India being the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, they have yet to plan coal plant retirements until 2030, even as a significant portion of its coal power capacity nears the end of its useful life. Recognizing the urgency, coal plant owners and local communities in India are increasingly receptive to innovative solutions like repurposing old coal plants for nuclear or small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Through techno-economic assessments and policy initiatives, India aims to navigate the complexities of repowering coal sites towards a sustainable energy future.
Research Objectives and Goals of the Repower Initiative and Altlinks Consultancy Services LLP
The Repower Initiative, in collaboration with Altlinks Consultancy Services LLP, embarks on a comprehensive study aimed at clarifying the challenges and opportunities surrounding the repowering of coal plants in India. Our primary objective is to develop a robust methodological framework for evaluating the feasibility of repurposing coal sites for alternative energy technologies such as nuclear, SMRs, geothermal, and storage. Through methodological cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and techno-economic assessments (TEA), our study seeks to provide empirical insights into the potential benefits and costs associated with repowering coal plants, informing policymakers and stakeholders on viable pathways for transitioning to cleaner energy sources. By incorporating considerations of utility, power system dynamics, and societal impacts, we aim to foster a just and inclusive transition towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.
