Powering the Future – The Macroeconomic and Socioeconomic Benefits of Coal-to-Nuclear Transitions
Tuesday 11 November 2025 14:00 – 15:00 (UTC+01:00)
To mark the release of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report Coal to Nuclear: Supporting a Clean Energy Transition, which was prepared for the South Africa’s 2025 G20 Presidency, the IAEA is hosting a webinar on the potential of transforming former coal plant sites into clean energy hubs powered by nuclear technology.
The webinar will explore the macro- and socioeconomic benefits of coal-to-nuclear projects, and highlight how coal-to-nuclear transitions can deliver unique opportunities to advance climate targets, while reinforcing energy security and fostering inclusive economic growth.
The discussion will cover job creation, community benefits, and policy considerations, alongside financing strategies that align climate action with long-term socioeconomic development.
Building on previous IAEA engagements, this webinar extends the dialogue on these topics by providing Member States and stakeholders with up-to-date insights on how nuclear energy can support a clean, secure, and just energy transition.
The webinar is organized by the IAEA’s Planning and Economic Studies Section (PESS) and is part of the Introducing Repurposing Strategies for Retired Fossil-Fired Power Plants with Nuclear Power Plants Webinar Series.
The Repower Initiative pioneered analytical research on the potential of the C2N pathway, and we are listed as one of “six relevant initiatives” in the IAEA report. Our Polish scientific partners at DEsire – Platforma Transformacji Energetyki also feature prominently in the report, highlighting their successes in convincing Poland to choose C2N.
We invite you to join us at the webinar!
🌟 Staffan Qvist, the founder of Repower will attend as a panellist.
The other panellists:
💫 Nellan Govender, Chief Engineer: Nuclear Engineering at Eskom, South Africa
