Why Repowering Is for the Environment Too

Reuse Before You Rebuild

🌲 Coal repowering is a very good idea because you can reuse your existing infrastructure. Why build a new site with a new grid, cut down the trees, flatten everything – when you have a site that is already available?

Even if the equipment is not fully reused, there is a foundation at least. Not to mention the grid connections and local expertise, which is costly and difficult to put in place.

🏭 We have built sites that are close to what we need. The facilities are ready, the technology can be adapted. What we have already is a good place to start from, as we shift to clean energy.

While new renewables are a positive gain for society, installing these often still involves clearing ecosystems and groundwork.

Protecting What Matters

🦌 We need to maintain our precious wildlife. Loss of nature also means loss of biodiversity and carbon-capturing trees. Destruction of natural habitat displaces animals, and causes further shifts in the weather.

Healthy forests emit natural volatiles like isoprene and monoterpenes which seed clouds in the sky. They are an essential part of the water cycle of the planet, bringing evaporation from the coasts to inland areas.

They are also our lungs, creating the oxygen we breathe.
